The “Blanket” Your Garden Needs This Summer.
In the harsh South African sun, bare soil dries out in hours. Our Organic Garden Mulch (coarse wood chips) acts as a protective barrier, keeping the soil beneath it cool and moist. It is the single most effective way to reduce your water consumption.
Why You Must Mulch:
Save Water: Mulch reduces surface evaporation by up to 70%. This means you water less often, saving money and time.
Suppress Weeds: A thick layer of mulch blocks sunlight from reaching the soil, preventing weed seeds from germinating.
Soil Health: As the wood chips slowly break down over time, they add organic matter to the soil, attracting earthworms and beneficial microbes.
Temperature Control: It insulates plant roots, keeping them cool in summer and warmer in winter.
Application Guide:
Thickness: Spread a layer about 5cm to 10cm thick across your flower beds.
Coverage: One cubic meter covers approximately 10-15m² (at a 7cm thickness).
Tree Rings: Create a “donut” shape around trees—keep the mulch away from touching the actual tree trunk to prevent rot.
Common Questions:
Does wood mulch attract termites? This is a common myth. While termites eat wood, they generally prefer dry, dead structural timber or cardboard. Garden mulch is usually moist and active with other insects (like beetles and worms) that compete with termites. However, keep mulch a few centimeters away from your house foundations just to be safe.
Will it steal nutrients from my plants? Fresh wood chips can absorb a small amount of Nitrogen only at the very surface where they touch the soil. They do not steal nutrients from deep down where the roots are. To be safe, sprinkle a little fertilizer before laying the mulch.
How often do I need to replace it? Because it is organic, it decomposes (which is good for the soil!). You typically need to “top up” your mulch layer once a year to keep it looking fresh and thick.
