Enhance your plants with this nutrient-rich organic compost. Perfect for gardening and improving soil fertility.
Build Better Soil from the Ground Up.
Our standard Mushroom Compost is a rich blend of organic materials (straw, peat, and manures) used in mushroom farming. Unlike our Sifted version, this mix retains its natural fibrous texture, making it the ultimate tool for soil conditioning in Pretoria East.
Why Choose Standard Mushroom Compost?
Soil Structure: The coarser texture and straw content help to physically open up compact soil. It introduces air channels into heavy clay, preventing waterlogging.
Moisture Retention: It acts like a giant sponge, holding water in the root zone longer—essential for surviving our dry winters.
Value for Money: Perfect for large landscaping projects where you need bulk organic matter to turn a “building site” into a garden.
Application Guide:
Dig It In: Because it is coarser, this compost is best used by digging it into the soil rather than leaving it on top.
Tree Planting: Mix 1 part compost with 2 parts soil when digging holes for new trees or shrubs.
New Beds: Spread a thick layer (5-10cm) over new ground and rotovate/dig it in to create a fertile base.
Is it safe for all plants? Mushroom compost is slightly alkaline (contains lime). It is fantastic for veggies, herbs, and most garden plants, but avoid using it on acid-lovers like Azaleas, Hydrangeas, and Camellias.
Common Questions:
What is the difference between Standard and Sifted Mushroom Compost? Standard: Contains small lumps and straw fibers. It is best for digging into the ground to improve soil structure. Sifted: Is fine and smooth. It is best for top dressing visible flower beds or lawns where you want a neat finish.
Is this good for clay soil? Yes, it is excellent. The fibrous nature of standard mushroom compost helps separate clay particles, improving drainage and making the soil easier to dig.
Can I use this on my lawn? We recommend the Sifted version or Lawn Dressing for lawns. Standard mushroom compost is a bit too coarse for grass and may leave small clumps on your lawn.
