Medium Dump Rock remains the most popular stone choice for structural landscaping in Pretoria. Larger than our “Mini” rock but highly manageable by hand, this 40mm–80mm size provides a bold, natural look that anchors any garden design while being easier to pack and place than ever before.
Why Choose the Medium Dump Rock?
-
Gabion Specialist: This 40mm–80mm size is beautifully calibrated for Gabion baskets. Because the 80mm maximum size allows them to pack much tighter than larger rocks, they create a dense, incredibly solid wall. (See our packing tip below for standard 50mm mesh!)
-
Verge Protection: Tired of cars parking on your grass or damaging your sprinklers? A border of our Medium Dump Rock is textured enough to deter vehicles but attractive enough to look intentional.
-
Water Features: Ideal for dry river beds or lining the edges of ponds. The 40mm–80mm rough texture creates beautiful, consistent water movement.
Application Guide
-
Retaining Walls: Fill your wire cages to build strong, drainage-friendly walls. Pack the larger stones on the outside and the smaller ones in the center for a tight, neat finish.
-
Erosion Control: Pack these stones onto steep embankments to lock the soil in place during heavy rain.
-
Security: Place them under windows or along perimeter fences; the uneven surface makes it difficult for intruders to walk silently.

Common Questions
How big is the “Medium” size? Our new specification is exactly 40mm to 80mm. To picture it, imagine stones roughly ranging from the size of a golf ball, to a peach, or a small lemon. They have a satisfying weight to them but can very easily be picked up and placed with one hand.
Is this 40mm–80mm size right for Gabion Baskets? Yes, but it requires a specific packing method! Because standard gabion mesh is 50mm x 50mm, the smaller 40mm stones will fall through the gaps if placed on the edges.
To build a secure and beautiful wall, you must hand-pack the larger stones against the outside mesh of the basket, and then dump the smaller 40mm rocks in the middle to fill the core. This method gives you a stunning, tight outer face while the smaller interior stones lock everything together and provide excellent drainage.
How do I clean the rocks? Dump rock is mined from the earth and will arrive covered in dust. You do not need to scrub them! Simply spray them down with a garden hose after placement, or wait for the first good rain to reveal their natural color.
